11th Jun '08

The 1st Annual Children’s consultation with Joint Monitoring Committee (JMC) on improvement of life and status of children, youth and disabled persons was held on 11th June 2008 in Cape Town, South Africa. During the event which doubled as a ‘Commemoration of the African Child’, pupils from all the nine South Africa’s provinces made presentations to Members of Parliament, addressing various aspects of their socio-economic well being and how these factors affect their learning conditions. They also made recommendations on how they would like the Government to address their grievances.  Delegates from other African countries, namely Kenya, Rwanda and Mozambique were invited to represent other African countries – in which they presented messages of support to their South African peers.  The learners were later afforded and opportunity to sit in parliament and follow proceedings during President Thabo Mbeki's Budget Vote.
