Message of Condolence 27 September 2011
To family, friends and staff of Professor Wangari Muta Maathai
It is with shock and deep sadness that we received news of the passing away of an Icon, a Great Daughter of Africa, Prof Wangari Maathai. Words seem inadequate to express the sorrow in our hearts.
From the staff of the High Commission of Kenya in Pretoria, South Africa, please accept our deepest and most heartfelt condolences.
A golden heart stopped beating and hardworking hands are now at rest. She will be greatly remembered for her contribution in the 70s for establishing an organisation that focused on environmental conservation and women's rights. She became a pillar of strength to the nation and was humbly rewarded in 2004 as the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace. She fought for multi - party democracy and helped the nation mature politically. As a nation, we are forever grateful for her outstanding contribution.
Although it is difficult today to see beyond the sorrow and as we share in your tears, let grateful memories survive forever and comfort you now and in the days ahead. This is a good time to re-evaluate our lives and ask what legacy we will leave behind. ProfWangari Maathai has set the bar so high!
"Poleni sana" as we stand in solidarity, our thoughts are with you at this time.
Kenyans in South Africa will plant a tree in her honour at Kenya House on Wednesday 28 September 2011 at 1730Hrs.
